“In important moments I can always give the best of me”

Cameron Norrie advances to the quarterfinals of the ATP in Buenos Aires. A surface, that of clay, which is undoubtedly not the favorite of the British tennis player, which is best expressed on hard and grass-courts due to its tennis skills.

The success, albeit with some difficulties, over the Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta, gives confidence to the number 12 in the world, who by his own admission still has ample room for improvement. In the next round Norrie will face Tomas Etcheverry.

At the press conference, the former Indian Wells champion touched on several interesting topics, including his ambitions in view of the next scheduled Grand Slam, the Roland Garros: Norrie told: “Honestly, I don’t think it was a great match for me, I didn’t do too well the fundamentals, serve and return.

If I had the same match, I would approach it differently. It took me too long to find the rhythm of the match. I gave a better level when it was necessary, I played a good tie-break. There was a great atmosphere, even though most of them supported my opponent.

Tomorrow I have to go back to the training ground and work on everything. I didn’t think too much about the pitch. Clay trades are usually like this. The pitch was good, there was almost no negative ball bounce. They’ve done a great job.

It’s much better than four years ago when I came to play. In terms of rebound it is quite similar to a hard court. I have to hit more to close the points. On clay I have to improve everything. My game on clay, especially today, needs a better serve and return.

I’ve made a lot of bad decisions. When the ball was high, I sent it high. I have to engage in my usual style. I love Argentina and wanted to play here again. The next Grand Slam isthe Roland Garros, I want to play well in big tournaments, so I have to improve a lot in my movements on the court to have options.

Facundo had nothing to lose in the match and he started feeling the pressure when he found himself ahead in the draw. I started the year with more wins than most players on the circuit, so I enter the court with that in mind.

I’m able to give my best in the most important moments, and I think that’s why I’m 12th in the world rankings. I feel I have to do it on the big stages. I think that’s how rankings work. The best players are able to give their best in the final stages of the Masters and Grand Slams.”
