Steven Gerrard ‘travels to Istanbul’ for ‘talks’ over vacant managerial post at Turkish club Trabzonspor

Steven Gerrard has reportedly flown to Turkey to hold talks over the vacant managerial post at Trabzonspor.

The Liverpool legend has been out of work since being sacked by Aston Villa in October after a run of six defeats in 11 matches, which left them just one place above the bottom three.

Gerrard could be set for a return to the dugout

Gerrard left Rangers for Villa in November 2021 having secured the Scottish Premiership title the previous season.

His team amassed a whopping 102 points during a title-winning campaign in which they remained unbeaten.

The 42-year-old was last month linked with the Leeds job before Javi Gracia was eventually handed the reins.

Paris Saint-Germain were also believed to be considering Gerrard as a candidate to replace under-fire boss Christophe Galtier.

But now it appears that the 2005 Champions League winning captain could try his hand in Turkey in what would be a surprise move.

According to Turkish outlet Karar, Gerrard flew out to Istanbul earlier this week for dinner with Ertugrul Dogan, who is in the running to become president of the Turkish club.

The report adds that Dogan, who is currently both vice president and chairman of the club, is ‘certain’ to appoint Gerrard if he wins the upcoming election.

The Turkish outfit are sixth in the table having won 11 games this season and remain in the mix for European qualification.

It remains to be seen whether Gerrard would be willing to uproot and move to Turkey to prolong his managerial career.

But there appears to be plenty of interest from the continent in the former Liverpool skipper after the Polish Football Association previously took him into consideration to take over as their national team boss.
