Holger Rune reveals steps he is taking to take his game to another level

Holger Rune now has a nutrition plan in place as the 19-year-old Dane revealed the tests he underwent showed he needed a higher intake of sugar and salt before his matches. Rune, ranked at No 11 in the world, enjoyed an outstanding end to the 2022 season as he became a Masters champion in Paris and also achieved a career-high ranking of No 10 after the Paris win.

Going into the 2023 season, Rune wants to elevate his game to another level and next year become a Grand Slam champion and also reach the top spot. Rune is setting big expectations for himself but he is also doing his best to put himself in a position to achieve success on the biggest stage.

Rune on the importance of a good diet

“I’m very calm and relaxed as a person – almost a little lazy. So, I don’t stress over things related to press or work. Sometimes it is good to be a little lazy because you can’t control everything.

I use my energy on court. And I have a really good family around me. Also, it is important to eat well and sleep enough during the season. Because if I have no energy, the engine will burn out. I have a nutrition plan now, so I know I get what I need.

We found out I did not get half of the sugar and salt I needed (for the matches), that is why I had meltdowns and cramps. I really did not know (things like these) could make so much difference. My coach says that a Ferrari with no fuel is useless.

He is right. So I’m much more aware now of what I eat. Even though I love pepperoni pizza and ice cream,” Rune told Relevant Tennis. During the indoor season, Rune made four finals and captured two titles. Rune also went to the ATP Finals, where he was an alternate but didn’t get a chance to play. It remains to be seen if Rune will become a Grand Slam champion next year.
