Hoping I can have an even better clay season than last year

Cori Gauff is looking forward to the clay season as she is hoping to make major results on the slowest tennis surface. Gauff, 19, made her first Grand Slam final at last year’s French Open before losing to Iga Swiatek. “I definitely think the game does simplify a little bit.

I have a clearer picture of how I want to play on that surface. I definitely think physically, usually, those are the players that are doing well on clay, so I think that’s why it suits me a lot. Taking in what I’ve done on the hard court season, I think, will help me into the clay season because last year, I didn’t have a great start, and that clay season turned it around.

Even though this tournament didn’t go how I wanted, I would say I had a decent start to the year. I’m hoping I can have an even better clay season than last year,”

Gauff said, per Sportskeeda.

Gauff positive about her start despite some disappointing results

On Saturday, Gauff exited the Miami Open after suffering a 6-7 (8) 7-5 6-2 loss to Anastasia Potapova.

Gauff was up by a set and had a 5-3 lead in the second set but just didn’t manage to close out the match. “It was definitely better than last year’s start. I think I improved throughout the season. I mean, obviously, today was a bit of a letdown for me.

But I feel like the decisions I’m making on the court are better than the decisions I was making last year into the season,” Gauff said. After winning Auckland in the first week of the season, Gauff’s big goal was to become a Grand Slam champion at the Australian Open but it didn’t happen.

Now, Gauff is set to play again on clay, the surface on which she made her first Grand Slam final. It remains to be seen if Gauff can make another deep French Open and become a Grand Slam champion at Roland Garros.
