‘I can’t even look’ – Norwich star Josh Sargent suffers freak injury after standing on the ball during USA victory over Iran as Americans set up crunch clash with Netherlands in World Cup last-16

Josh Sargent was forced off the pitch after suffering a freak injury during USA’s 1-0 victory over Iran at the World Cup.

The Norwich City star had set the tempo for the Americans, but was the victim of a nasty-looking injury late in the second half.

Running after the ball, Sargent looked like he was anticipating an incoming tackle and tried to step over the ball.

However due to the slippery conditions he ended up standing on the ball, before it spun away from him, leading to the 22-year-old overextending his leg as it planted firmly in the turf.

Speaking on talkSPORT 2’s commentary, Chris Iwelumo said: “He’s struggling there, he’s struggling.

“It’s his ankle, his Achilles, everything because he comes down on top of the ball

“It’s his Achilles, it doesn’t look good for Sargent. It’s the way he comes down on the ball, so he’s basically stepped on the ball.

“I can’t even look at it again!”

Thankfully, Sargent was able to hobble his way round to the dugout after coming off

Unsurprisingly, Sargent was forced off the field and replaced by Haji Wright.

Sargent had a scan on Wednesday morning and we now await the results. Hopefully, it won’t be too bad.

Thankfully for him, Christian Pulisic’s first-half goal was enough to earn a 1-0 victory over Iran to send them through to the next round of the competition.

They’ll face the Netherlands in what is set to be a tricky contest at the weekend.

And Pulisic should be fit for the clash despite an injury of his own.

The player received what is being called a ‘pelvic contusion’ while scoring the game-winning goal.

“So f***ing proud of my guys I’ll be ready Saturday don’t worry,” Pulisic posted on social media after being attended to by medics.
