Brooks Koepka makes statement for LIV Golf after Viktor Hovland finds disaster at PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka won his first major in four years with victory at the 2023 PGA Championship.

The 33-year-old cruised to a two-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland, who found disaster late on Sunday.

Koepka becomes the first LIV Golf player to win a major after defecting to the controversial breakaway circuit.

It represents a statement victory for LIV Golf in their ongoing battle against the PGA Tour – and also furthers Koepka‘s pursuit of a place on Team USA at the Ryder Cup in September.

The American endured a difficult four years after his second PGA Championship triumph in 2019, fighting injuries and low confidence.

But after finishing tied second at the Masters in April, Koepka is beginning to look like the major-winning machine of 2017 to 2019.

It was also a familiar story for Hovland, albeit for the wrong reasons.

Having been in contention at the 2022 Open Championship and this year’s Masters, the Norwegian suffered a dramatic collapse on the 16th hole.

Hovland was within one of Koepka for much of round four, but smashed his second shot into the lip of a bunker on the third-last hole.

It would result in a double-bogey and the end of any challenge to Koepka’s lead.

Scheffler finished second after a resurgent 65 on Sunday, although the world no. 2 was never truly in the mix on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy bounced back from his missed cut at the Masters with a respectable top-ten finish.
