Nick Kyrgios revealed that he was admitted to a psych ward in London after exiting Wimbledon in 2019. In the second season of Netflix’s Break Point – which is set to be released on June 21st – Kyrgios said 2019 was “the lowest point of my career.” At Wimbledon that year, Kyrgios defeated Jordan Thompson before losing to Rafael Nadal in the second round.
At the time, Kyrgios was self-harming himself and he played at Wimbledon with a sleeve to cover his scars. After seeing his father crying over his condition, Kyrgios realized it was time for him to get himself in the right state of mind.
“I was genuinely contemplating if I wanted to commit suicide. I lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my dad was sitting on the bed, full-blown crying. That was the big wake-up call for me. I was like, OK, I can’t keep doing this.
I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems,” Kyrgios said, via Fox Sports Australia.
Kyrgios: I was drinking, abusing drugs
After falling into a very dark place mentally, Kyrgios turned to alcohol, drugs and self-harm to cope with his pain.
“I was drinking, abusing drugs, lost my relationship with my family, pushed all my close friends away. You could tell I was hurting. My whole arm was covered in scars. That’s why I actually got my arm sleeve. To cover it all,” Kyrgios said.
George Kyrgios was heartbroken seeing his son in such a mental state and he made sure to let the tennis star know he is always there for him. “I told him, ‘This is not the right path, mate. You’ve got bigger and better things to chase, you know.’ He was in tears.
I’m here for Nick. Nothing else matters. When he’s away, he’s my first priority. He’s very sensitive, very fragile,” George Kyrgios said. Now, Kyrgios seems to be genuinely happy in life as he is in a happy relationship and that resulted in him playing his career-best tennis in 2022.
