After getting past Jiri Lehecka, Daniil Medvedev expressed his thoughts on the way Victoria Azarenka was treated by the Wimbledon crowd because she didn’t shake hands with Elina Svitolina at the end of their well-fought match.
“I think big misunderstanding. It’s very pity for Vika because she lost 11-9 on the tiebreaker. It’s brutal for anyone that loses a third-set tiebreaker, deciding set tiebreaker is brutal. As she said, I actually liked her response on the press conference, she respected the decision of Svitolina, about not shaking hands,” said Medvedev.
“I think the crowd that comes, Court 1 is what, maybe 10,000 people. I actually don’t know. They’re not all going to know the story behind this. They just saw Vika not shaking hands. That’s why I think they booed her. I liked her response where she said it was a great match and let’s talk about tennis.
I think it’s a pity for sure for her that she got booed, and probably for no reason. But I think the people didn’t know the story behind it, and that’s why it happened.”
Azarenka’s reaction after she got booed
Victoria Azarenka didn’t like the fact she exited Court 1 while getting booed by the crowd.
“It wasn’t right, but it is what it is and what can I do? I haven’t done anything wrong, but I can’t control the crowd.I’m not sure many people understand what’s going on. But if people they’ll just focus on handshakes, then it’s a pretty drunk crowd, booing at the end, and then it’s a shame,” said Azarenka. You can watch the moment below.
Why would the Wimbledon crowd boo Victoria Azarenka? It makes no sense. It was Svitolina who has unilaterally decided not to shake hands with certain players. I feel sorry for @vika7 ! pic.twitter.com/zPWWqkwOiM — दिविर à¤à¥à¤¨ (@divirj04) July 9, 2023
