Novak Djokovic says winning the Davis Cup with Serbia is his “priority” for the remainder of the 2023 season. This week, Serbia is competing in the Davis Cup Finals group stage in Valencia. Should Serbia make it past the group stage, they would earn a ticket for the Davis Cup Finals knockout stage, which takes place in Malaga between November 21-26.

In 2010, Djokovic led Serbia to their first and so far lone Davis Cup title. “My priority will be winning the Davis Cup. I hope it will come step by step. The first step was taken without me by winning against South Korea with 3:0 two days ago.

I came here to contribute to the overall triumph of Serbia. The goal is to qualify for the final tournament in Malaga and to go where we didn’t play last year,” Djokovic told Sport Klub.

Djokovic praised for coming to the Davis Cup Finals group stage

On Sunday, Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open.

On Wednesday, Djokovic landed in Valencia to join the Serbian Davis Cup team. Feliciano Lopez, who now serves as the Davis Cup Finals tournaments director, applauded Djokovic’s decision to represent his country in the Davis Cup.

In Valencia, Djokovic was the only top-10 player who came to compete. “He won the 24th Grand Slam title and immediately came to play for his national team. This is how this competition is respected, Novak is the best example.

We are very grateful that he came, but it is also important that people see what the Davis Cup means to the players and to the world of tennis. The fact that someone like Novak came says a lot about how he keeps his word, but he also points out that this competition evokes incredible emotions that he also wants to experience again,” Lopez said of Djokovic coming to the Davis Cup.
