Holger Rune, 20, admits he felt “starstruck” after listening to an interview in which Roger Federer mentioned his name in a positive context several times. This week, Federer flew to Vancouver for the 2023 Laver Cup edition.

Speaking to Eurosport, Federer explained why he feels the state of tennis is currently in a good spot. “On the men’s side, we have some great, great moments with Novak rewriting history, Alcaraz winning Wimbledon. I mean, I think, Medvedev played fantastic as well in New York.

Young guys coming through as well. A generation that I didn’t play very – at all, actually. Rune, Sinner and Alcaraz, unfortunately I missed them, you know, playing against them. I think the future looks bright. And of course, the game can always evolve, will always evolve.

And the good thing is, I really enjoy watching and still following a lot of the results. I mean, I just like how it’s actually not in a lull,” Federer told Eurosport. Reacting to Federer’s comments, Rune wrote on X: “I admit it.

I am starstruck. I had to listen twice, (maybe 3-4 times), Roger mentioning my name. #legend.”

Rune ‘starstruck’ after Federer’s praise

Rune, who turned 20 in April, is one of the most promising and talented players in the game.

So far, Rune has won four titles and he is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world. In late 2022 – when Rune was 19 years old – he became a Masters champion in a very impressive style as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Paris final.

Following his Paris Masters win, Rune also reached the top-10 for the first time in his career. Although Rune has already achieved some notable things, he is aiming for a much bigger success as the Dane has highlighted several times that he wants to win Grand Slams and also reach the world No 1 spot.
