he year 2023 was Jon Rahm’s year mainly because of his Augusta Masters, but also David Puig’s. The young Catalan, 21 years old, with a career ahead of him, has confirmed himself as a solid value in Torque, the team captained by the Chilean Joaquín Niemann, and in addition to contributing to winning three LIV Golf tournaments, he added in this course the victory in the Asian Tour at the Singapore tournament.

As a cherry on top, on Sunday they will fight in Miami for the Tour team title promoted by Saudi Arabia and which carries a prize of 14 million dollars for the first of which 1.4 will go to each player.

To do this, as if it were a regular tournament, the 48 LIV players will play a stroke play today and the one who scores the least – again the three best cards will count – will be the winning team. Only the four teams that reached the final will compete, a selection based on match play, while the members of the other teams will fight to be ranked from 5 to 8 and from 9 to 12, depending on the qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday.

In this phase, the other team with Spanish representation fell, the Fireballs of Sergio García and Eugenio López Chacarra. Puig was paired with Mito Pereira, while Niemann and Sebastián Muñoz played the singles.

It was a crushing victory for Torque against the Stingers of Oosthuizen and company by 3-0. The Catalan and the Chilean won 2 up against Schwartzel and Burmester in the foursome format, in the most disputed match. The Fireballs meanwhile suffered worse luck.

García served as captain and dispatched Bubba Watson, but in the decisive clash between Talor Gooch, the LIV player of the year, and López Chacarra, he could not close a match that he led until the 16th hole.

There, the Oklahoman equalized the contest and with more experience than the Madrid native earned him two pairs to win the match in the last two holes by 2 up. The Mexicans Ancer and Ortiz had fallen 2 and 1 against Vagner III and Pieters.

The seeding status weighed in this tie as both Dustin Johnson’s Aces, the favorites to renew last year’s title, and DeChambeau’s Crushers beat the Hyflyers (Mickelson captain) and Cleeks (Kaymer) by 2 and 1 .
