Classy trailer drops for new 1990 Scotland Grand Slam film

Rugby fans eagerly awaiting the upcoming Calcutta Cup fixture in the opening round of the 2023 Guinness Six Nations have had their appetite whetted by the 30-second trailer for the new film recounting the famed 1990 Five Nations clash between Scotland and England at Murrayfield.

The winner-takes-all championship showdown 33 years ago was memorably won 13-7 by the Scots amid a backdrop of political upheaval in the UK at the time. This story has now been retold in vivid detail in The Grudge, an 80-minute movie on the blockbuster that was David Sole’s Scotland defeating Will Carling’s England.

In the teaser posted to social media by BT Sport, the actor Robert Carlyle, who narrated the movie, set the scene: “Murrayfield, March 1990. Scotland versus England, winner-takes-all Five Nations Grand Slam. It was Thatcher’s poll tax, rising nationalism, animosity both on and off the field. Never before had the stakes been this high. BT Sport Films presents The Grudge.”

England had arrived in Edinburgh tipped to win their first Grand Slam since 1980 but Scotland instead upset the odds and their six-point victory gave them only their third-ever Grand Slam title.

The film premieres on Friday, January 20, on BT Sport 1 and ahead of the launch, RugbyPass will publish an exclusive interview this Sunday with Jeremy Guscott, the England try-scorer on that fateful day in 1990 when Carling and co were ambushed.
