Wolves agree fee for Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes, who was linked with Liverpool and Man United, after winning transfer tug of war against Lyon

Wolves have finally agreed a £15million deal with Flamengo for midfielder Joao Gomes, talkSPORT understands.

The deal was put on hold after Flamengo accepted a rival bid from Lyon but Gomes refused to join the French club.

Gomes is set to be Wolves’ fifth addition of the January transfer window, with Julen Lopetegui also wrapping up deals for Matheus Cunha, Craig Dawson, Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina.

The 21-year-old has previously been linked with Premier League big hitters Liverpool and Manchester United.

South American football expert Tim Vickery told talkSPORT that the Red Devils considered making a move for Gomes when Andreas Pereira was on loan at Flamengo last season.

However, Man United’s decision to sell Pereira to Fulham in the summer put any potential approach for Gomes on ice.

Gomes has also spoken of his desire to play for Liverpool amid previous links with them.

Responding to rumours of an Anfield switch, Gomes said in September: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play.

“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”

For now Gomes will have to settle for a Premier League relegation battle with Wolves only out of the drop zone on goal difference.

Wolves’ next outing sees them face Liverpool at Molineux in the Premier League on February 4.
