VAR official John Brooks who chalked off Brighton goal replaced for Everton’s game with rivals Liverpool and Arsenal vs Manchester City

Premier League official John Brooks has been replaced as video assistant referee for two of this week’s blockbuster clashes.

The Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL) released a statement on Sunday confirming Brooks was one of two officials who had made ‘significant errors’ on Saturday, with him incorrectly chalking off one of Brighton’s goals against Crystal Palace.

Now, the PGMOL has confirmed Brooks will no longer be VAR for Everton’s game against rivals Liverpool on Monday – live on talkSPORT – and Arsenal’s clash against title rivals Manchester City in two days time.

Andre Marriner and David Coote will assume VAR duties in his place on Monday and Wednesday respectively.

The Gunners will be hoping to increase the three-point gap they have on second place Manchester City on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Brentford’s equaliser against Arsenal wasn’t checked properly by VAR, meaning the Gunners missed out on the chance to maintain their advantage on Man City as they settled for a 1-1 draw.

But now, hopes of a better VAR this time around will have been boosted, with Brooks – who incorrectly ruled out Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan’s opener against rivals Crystal Palace – now removed from his position for this week’s game.

The same applies to Sean Dyche’s Everton, who look to climb out of the relegation zone against fierce rivals Liverpool.

Due to Monday evening’s fixture, the PGMOL has confirmed appointments for the weekend’s matches will be announced on Tuesday.

Referee chief Howard Webb called all officials to attend a meeting at Stockley Park on Tuesday following Saturday’s blunders.

On Sunday, the PGMOL confirmed Webb had contacted Arsenal and Brighton following the ‘significant errors’.

Their announcement read: “PGMOL can confirm its Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb has contacted both Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to acknowledge and explain the significant errors in the VAR process in their respective Premier League fixtures on Saturday.

“Both incidents, which were due to human error and related to the analysis of offside situations, are being thoroughly reviewed by PGMOL.”

Brighton have since confirmed they received an apology and have accepted it.

Meanwhile Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta appeared unhappy after the draw with Brentford and said after the match: “I’ve just looked at it back, and it is offside.

“If we apply what the referee tells us every single week before the game. If you are the blocker then you are offside. It’s offside.”

Tuesday’s emergency summit suggests the PGMOL are keen to avoid the same embarrassment for this week’s highly anticipated clashes.
