Fighter on undercard of Lawrence Okolie vs David Light sends opponent flying at weigh-in as face-off boils over

The Lawrence Okolie vs David Light weigh-ins turned violent, but not from the main event fighters.

Okolie will defend his WBO world title on Saturday night in Manchester against Light and the undercard features an English super featherweight clash between Michael Gomez Jr and Levi Giles.

As soon as the pair approached each other, it was clear something would go wrong

Gomez Jr was clearly pumped up ahead of the weigh-in, as he turned up in sunglasses and he was playing to the crowd before stepping on the scales and he let out a roar when it was announced he had made weight.

After his opponent had also taken to the scales, the pair faced off and as soon as they got close, Gomez Jr gave Giles a huge shove that saw him fly backwards and land on the floor.

Giles made it back to his feet and the pair had to be separated by security, as there is clear animosity between these two men, but they will not have to wait long to settle their differences in the ring.

As for the main event, Okolie came in at 14 stone 4 lbs, while Light weighed 14 stone 2 lbs, both registering under the cruiserweight limit.

The face-off between these two men was far less intense than that of Gomez Jr and Giles, but that does not mean either man will not be bringing the energy on Saturday night.

In terms of what has been said, Okolie acknowledged that Light will be a challenge, as he told talkSPORT: “He’s 20 fights undefeated, a commonwealth silver medallist, so he’s got pedigree and self-belief.

“He’s got a good training team and whole country behind him, so he’s going to come and give it a good shot and I have to stop him.

“I know I’m going to win, but I can’t quite see it yet until I see him in real life whether it’s going to be a quick knockout, a mid-round knockout.

“It’s only when you get in the ring that you get a feel for it, but I see myself dominating from range and forcing him to make mistakes or dive in or try too hard and then I’ll get rid of him.”

Should Okolie beat Light, he will then be looking at either a grudge match with bitter rival Richard Riakporhe, a unification with one of the other cruiserweight champions or he is also considering a move up to heavyweight.
