“I can win a Grand Slam”

Matteo Berrettini‘s 2022 was unfortunately characterized by a large number of injuries. Injuries that prevented him from competing to his fullest potential. The Italian, after reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, had to stop in Acapulco due to an abdominal problem and then decided to have surgery on his right hand on 29 March.

Surgery forced him to sit out all season on clay. The Italian subsequently returned to the field on grass and conquered the Stuttgart and Quenn’s tournaments proving that he can play his chances at Wimbledon. Bad luck, however, still raged against him.

The swab carried out a few hours after his debut on the lawns of the All England Club was positive and Berrettini had to leave the tournament prematurely. A non-optimal physical condition did not allow him to compete 100% during the American swing.

Berrettini picked up two first-round losses in Montreal and Cincinnati, but then managed to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open. Finally, a new foot injury and a new forced stop arrived in Naples.

Berrettini: “I can win a Grand Slam”

Matteo can’t wait to raise his head again in 2023.

His goal is to play with greater continuity and try to make history in Grand Slam tournaments. Berrettini reached the final at Wimbledon in 2021 and proved he can beat anyone on the lawns of the All England Club. During a last interview for Eurosport, the Italian talked about the goal he would like to achieve in the next season: “I want it to be an exciting year for me.

I saw that I can play for it to win a Grand Slam. I haven’t gotten that far in past seasons. It is definitely a goal, but first of all I have to think about my health. Without that, it’s difficult to play tennis. But if I feel good, the goal is to win a Grand Slam, a Masters 1000, go far in the best tournaments. I can do it.”
