Frank Warren has passionately defended Tyson Fury who has faced backlash following the collapse of his proposed fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
‘The Gypsy King’ has been locked in negotiations with Usyk for months ahead of a historic undisputed heavyweight title fight which was supposed to take place at Wembley Stadium on April 29
However, talks recently collapsed after Alex Krassyuk, Usyk’s promoter, accused Fury of making ‘disrespectful’ demands during negotiations.
The Englishman and his team insisted that the only point of contention yet to be resolved before Usyk’s withdrawal from fight talks was the purse split for a potential rematch.
Fury branded his rival a ‘coward’ during a foul-mouthed rant on social media but some people are blaming the WBC heavyweight champion who also failed to make a fight with Anthony Joshua happen last year.
Warren recently appeared on talkSPORT Fight Night to remind everyone that his client has never shied away from taking tough fights and insist that is not what’s happening now.
He told Adam Catterall and Gareth A. Davies: “Suddenly we’ve got a few Tyson haters at the moment.
“Listen, this fella has never ducked anybody, he went out to Germany as an underdog [against Wladimir Klitschko].
“Do you know what he got? He walked away with £1million from that fight and he was the mandatory challenger, that’s what he walked away with, but he went there and he won the titles.
“The first fight when he fought Deontay Wilder, he took a real short end of it to fight Wilder but we believed we could win the fight. It was a draw as we know, bad decision but we got the draw but that’s what he done.
“So, don’t criticise Tyson Fury, he’s had three fights in the [United] States against Wilder, great fights.
“One was probably the best round of the last ten years – that last round of the first fight. The second fight was a phenomenal performance, and the third fight was the best heavyweight fight I’ve seen live in my time in boxing.”
It’s currently unclear who Fury will fight next but he previously suggested a clash with former UFC champion Francis Ngannou would happen if he was unable to secure a fight for all the heavyweight belts.
Usyk is expected to face Daniel Dubois later this year. ‘DDD’ holds the WBA ‘regular’ title and is the mandatory challenger for the ‘super’ belt currently owned by ‘Joker.’
