The Twitter layoffs continue under Elon Musk’s new reign

The Twitter layoffs continue.

Reportedly at least a dozen more cuts have been made on Jan. 6 in Twitter’s Dublin and Singapore offices. While Elon Musk’s new Twitter ownership has notoriously been a disastrous few months of incessant layoffs, the recent cut has slashed a deeper wound in the site’s already limited content moderation team.

Workers in charge of handling misinformation, hate speech, global content, and harassment have been the main target of this layoff. Which sets a gloomy cloud in the future of Twitter’s content chamber. In a request for comment by Bloomberg, Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, shared “It made more sense to consolidate teams under one leader (instead of two) for example,” and that the newly eliminated roles were under areas of the company that weren’t getting enough “volume” to grant further support.

Musk’s reign over Twitter has been an erratic few months defined by abrupt changes, widespread company layoffs, and unsolicited interface ideas (think the horrible view count option). The recent layoffs come after November’s reckoning where almost half of Twitter’s full-time employees were suddenly fired. According to Bloomberg, “Since taking over the company, Musk has overseen firings or departures of roughly 5,000 of Twitter’s 7,500 employees.”

Long story short, Musk’s ownership continues to be a turbulent turning point for the site that’s certainly bound for more future chaos.
