University of Texas at Austin claimed a spot at the ITA National Championships

No. 4 University of Texas at Austin men’s tennis team beat Oklahoma State 4-1 at the Texas Tennis Center, getting a sport for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be held from Feb. 16-19 in New York.

After taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, the Longhorns received singles victories from senior No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri at No. 1, junior No. 49 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 4, and senior No. 2 Micah Braswell at No. 2. Now, the Longhorns will host 9 Stanford on Sunday 4 February 2024 at the Texas Tennis Center.

Among the highlights, Micah Braswell and freshman Gilles-Arnaud Bailly defeated Leighton Allen and Eric Schiessl, 6-0. The nation’s third-ranked doubles team of Eliot Spizzirri and senior Cleeve Harper led Alex Garcia and Tyler Zink, 4-3, when play stopped. Both teams started the match 1-1 before Texas held serve next. In singles play, Spizzirri was first to finish, recording an efficient 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over No. 18 Zink. The deciding match for Texas was No. 2 Micah Braswell’s 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over No. 48 Garcia at No. 2. Braswell dropped the third game and then held a 3-1 lead . That would be the only break of the first set, with Braswell winning the final game with a tie.

The university’s men’s and women’s athletics teams are nicknamed the Longhorns. Texas has won 50 total national championships, 42 of which are NCAA national championships.
