Frank Lampard offers blunt response when asked if Mason Mount’s Chelsea future is a ‘lost cause’

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard provided a short response when quizzed on Mason Mount’s future.

The 24-year-old could be set to leave the Blues in the summer after failing to agree a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Mount’s current contract expires next summer so Chelsea could sanction a sale this year to provide funds for their own transfers.

A pelvic injury has kept him out of the side in recent weeks and there is a chance he could have played his last game for the club, their 2-0 home defeat to Real Madrid.

Ahead of their clash against Manchester United, Lampard was asked about the player’s future, but did not give a definitive answer.

He said: “A lost cause? I don’t know, that’s not my answer to make. That’s between Mason and the club.”

Mount has enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Chelsea since he made his first-team debut in 2019.

The England international has won the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Blues over four campaigns.

Last season saw him hit his most impressive numbers to date, scoring 13 goals and assisting another 16 in all competitions.

However, his form this term has been sub-par compared to such a number of contributions, scoring just three goals and assisting six.

A summer exit has been speculated for a while and Mount could very well be playing for a new club next season.

talkSPORT understands that United have joined Arsenal and Liverpool in the race to sign him this summer.

The Red Devils are willing to offer around £50million for his services, but Chelsea are eyeing a fee closer to £80million.

Mauricio Pochettino, who is set to be announced as the new manager at Stamford Bridge, would like him to stay at the club.

However, the signs seem to point towards a departure in the summer, one that would bring an end to an impressive spell in west London.

talkSPORT will provide exclusive live commentary of Chelsea’s penultimate game of the season against United on Thursday night.
