Ovechkin will miss playing in Caps’ reverse retro jerseys originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The 2022-23 season has been littered with milestones for Alex Ovechkin. There appears to be a good luck charm in seven of Ovi’s games this season, and they all have come at home in the Capitals’ black reverse retro jerseys.
Ovechkin has recorded a goal in all seven of those games, including his 802nd goal to pass Gordie Howe on the all-time goals list. Saturday night in Capital One Arena against the Philadelphia Flyers, Ovechkin added to the history books scoring his 30th goal of the season. This goal tied longtime Capitals forward Mike Gartner for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history with 17.
In his 18-year career, Ovechkin has scored 30 or more goals in every single year of his career except the 2020-21 season that was shortened by COVID-19, when he notched just 24 goals. To add onto this impressive feat, Ovechkin at 37 years old became the oldest player to score 30 or more goals since Martin St. Louis achieved it in the 2013-14 season at the age of 37 as well.
After tallying his first period goal tonight, Ovechkin spoke with Al Koken during the first intermission about the success he has found in the reverse retro jerseys and how he hopes the team brings them back next year.
Ovechkin remains optimistic the Capitals’ will provide more than seven opportunities for him to be able to suit up in the reverse retros.
