USWNT’s World Cup draw against Netherlands leads to record number of viewers

The USWNT’s 1-1 draw against the Netherlands on Wednesday night led to a record number of viewers — 6,429,000 million to be exact, making it the most-watched women’s Group Stage match ever on U.S. English-language television, according to Fox Sports.

The match also did strong numbers on Telemundo. It brought in 1,510,000 viewers to make it the second-most watched FIFA women’s World Cup match in Spanish-language history and breaking the group stage record.

The 6,429,000 million viewers on Fox shatters the previous record for a USWNT Group Stage World Cup match. Roughly 5,337,000 viewers tuned it to watch the U.S.’s 3-0 victory over Chile in the 2019 World Cup.

How much the USWNT’s potential loss played a role in the viewership is unclear. A poor first half and potential loss was saved by a second half goal Lindsey Horan.

However, a prime time slot likely paid dividends for the ratings, raking in top numbers on streaming services, too. Though that won’t be the case in the United States’ next meeting. They will play Portugal at 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday in a matchup that could decide their tournament fate.

Because of the draw with the Netherlands, a loss against Portugal next Tuesday eliminates the USWNT from the World Cup before the knockout stage for the first time ever.
