Elisabetta Cocciaretto made her way into the semi-finals of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Friday. The Italian second seed came through against eighth seed Elina Avanesyan 7-5, 6-3 in their quarter-final. Cocciaretto needed an hour and 35 minutes to post the win.Cocciaretto won 55% of her first-serve points and 55% points on return on her opponent’s first serve.

However, she made huge headway throughout the match by winning 90% points on return on Avanesyan’s second serve. The world no. 42 went on to win 50% of her second-serve points. Of the eight break points she faced, Cocciaretto saved four.

She, however, converted all seven break points that came her way on her rival’s serve.This is the second time in 2023 Cocciaretto’s reached the semi-final of a WTA tournament. Back in January, at the start of the season, she’d reached the semi-final in Hobart before making it all the way to the final.

Ladies Open Lausanne: A Frenchwoman will contest Sunday’s final

In the Swiss event this week, Cocciaretto will next play Anna Bondar.The Hungarian defeated Tamara Zidansek 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 22 minutes in their quarter-final.

Bondar won 77% of her first-serve points to the Slovenian’s 57%. She also won 50% of her second-serve points and 85% points on return on the former French Open semi-finalist’s second serve. Bondar saved all three break points she faced while converting five of nine break points that came her way.This is Bondar’s first semi-final appearance in a WTA tournament this year.In the top half, France’s Clara Burel made her way into the penultimate round.

Burel advanced after her opponent, third seed Ana Bogdan retired due to ill-health midway in their match. Burel was leading 6-3, 1-0 at the time.Burel will now play an all-French contest with Diane Parry for a chance to reach the Ladies Open Lausanne’s final.

The ninth-seeded Parry won a quarter-final French derby against seventh seed Alize Cornet, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 18 minutes.
