Andy Roddick recounts beating Roger Federer in 2008 Miami

Andy Roddick admits it was a very emotional moment for him when he defeated Roger Federer at the 2008 Miami Open. Roddick, a former world No 1, beat Federer 7-6 (4) 4-6 6-3 in the 2008 Miami quarterfinal. At the time, it was Roddick’s just second win over Federer in their 17 meetings.

“I own that guy, that guy never had anything against me. He told me after the match, ‘Andy I think you’re just totally in my head now.’ Okay, so I sobbed a little. I think I was pretty relieved and happy and, you know, I saw my box — My brother and my agent, they’ve seen me lose to him a lot of times and they shared a lot of nights with me afterward where they were trying to convince me I’m going to beat him one time.

I was happy for them, too,” Roddick said on Tennis Channel.

Roddick lost four Grand Slam finals to Federer

In 2003, Roddick won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. In the next couple of years, Roddick made four more Grand Slam finals but never again lifted a Slam title.

In each of those four Grand Slam finals that Roddick ended on the losing side, he played against Federer. In 2004, Roddick made his second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon. That year, Roddick was up by a set before Federer stormed back to win in four sets.

The following year, Roddick returned to the Wimbledon final but again lost to Federer. In 2006, Roddick reached his second US Open final – he was beaten by Federer in four sets. In the 2009 Wimbledon final, Roddick was the closest to beating Federer in a Grand Slam final but the Swiss escaped with a five-set win after winning the decider with a 16-14 score.

In the end, Roddick and Federer played 24 times against each other, with the American winning just three of their 24 meetings.
