Venus Williams posts injury update after missing Australian Open: Rehabbing in style

Venus Williams is “rehabbing in style” as she has dropped a hint to fans that she will soon be returning to action.

Williams, 42, kicked off her 2023 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where she defeated Katie Volynets in the first round.

After beating Volynets, Williams lost to Zhu Lin in her next match and also contracted an injury. Williams, who was awarded a main draw wildcard into the Australian Open, ended up withdrawing from the Australian Open as Tennis Australia redirected the American’s wildcard to Kim Birrell.

“Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to an injury sustained at the ASB Classic in New Zealand. Australia’s Kim Birrell will be awarded her wildcard place,” the Australian Open’s statement read.

Will Williams play against Danielle Collins?

Next week, an ATP 250 event in Dallas is taking place. For this year’s tournament, the Dallas organizers also decided to host a women’s exhibition match. For February 4th – which is this Saturday – seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams is scheduled to play 2022 Australian Open finalist Collins.

“We are thrilled to announce that Venus Williams will join us in our inaugural showcase of women’s tennis at the 2023 ATP Dallas Open, playing in the Women’s Tennis Classic. In addition to some of the best names in the sport expected to compete in the ATP Dallas Open, having a legend like Venus join us just adds to a fantastic week of tennis,” tournament director Peter Lebedevs said in early December.

The Dallas organizers haven’t made any announcements in recent days regarding the match. With that being said, it seems that Williams will play Collins in an exhibition match this weekend. Meanwhile, Williams clinched her first singles win since 2021 Wimbledon after beating Volynets in Auckland.

Last year, Williams appeared in four singles tournaments and went 0-4. It was certainly very disappointing for Williams to pick up an injury early in the season and miss the Australian Open.
