Chelsea likened to Graham Potter’s Brighton side by Jason Cundy, who tells Todd Boehly to sign new striker as stats reveal Blues’ goalscoring problems

Jason Cundy was every Chelsea fan having been left dumbfounded as to how the Blues didn’t manage to score against Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea fell to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against the German side, but it certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying.

The Blues peppered the Dortmund goal having registered eight shots on target, 21 overall at Signal Iduna Park.

None of them beat Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and the end of the match saw a number of worrying goalscoring stats emerge for Chelsea.

In 2023, Chelsea have scored just four goals in nine matches in all competitions, failing to score in five of those games.

Meanwhile, they’ve drawn a blank in more matches (five) this calendar year so far than any other Premier League club.

Todd Boehly is understood to have spent just under £540million since he took control of the club in May 2022 but Cundy believes the Chelsea co-owner needs to dip his hand in his pocket once more to sign a striker.

Cundy also revealed that watching Chelsea is like watching Brighton under current Blues boss Graham Potter.

But they’re still lacking a cutting edge going forward

He said on The Sports Bar: “I’m not worried about Dortmund, we can beat them at our place. They weren’t great, we can beat them.

“But if we play the same and we don’t score we’re out. Simple as that and football will never change. It’s so frustrating to play as well as we did…

“I think this is like watching Potter’s Brighton… chances they create, play well and don’t put the ball in the back of the net. Honestly, it’s so frustrating. The frustration of watching Chelsea play tonight.

“I don’t care how much money we spend, spend more! We need a striker and you need someone that can put the ball in the back of the net.”
