Alan Shearer leads Newcastle support after Boxing Day win puts club second in Premier League table and Eddie Howe pleased for fans

Alan Shearer was delighted after Newcastle’s win over Leicester and led the celebrations as they moved to second in the league.

Shearer is a lifelong Newcastle United fan and their all-time top goalscorer and has been happy with their progress over the last year, with the Magpies now sitting amongst the league’s best heading into 2023.

Newcastle ended Boxing Day second in the league and fans are in dreamland

Their comeback to domestic football saw them beat Leicester City 3-0 on Boxing Day, with Chris Wood, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton getting the goals against the Foxes.

Shearer expressed his delight on Twitter, praising Newcastle’s display against Leicester, the team his Match of the Day colleague supports.

Writing on Twitter after the game, he said: “That’s three points for the Toon and 3 goals and a clean sheet. What a great performance. Should be a good Match of the Day! What time we on @GaryLineker? TOON TOON.”

Eddie Howe, meanwhile, is keeping his feet on the ground and eyes on the next objective, but doesn’t mind if the fans dream of big things over the next few months.

There is hope that Newcastle can make Europe this season – possibly even the Champions League – but Howe is calling for calm from his team and staff.

“My attitude won’t change but I’ve no problem with the supporters dreaming, talking and speculating about what we can achieve,” he said after the match.

Eddie Howe has urged for calm amongst his staff

“We need to be mindful internally and focus on what we can control, which is our own thoughts and actions. And not look too far ahead or listen too much to news media and focus on our training and games. This is the toughest league in the world for a reason.”
