Magnificent performance by Alex Noren in the first round of the 2023 Bermuda Championship. The Swede, 41 years old and with no successes (all on the European Tour: he has never won on the PGA) lasting 5 years, is in fact in the lead with one spectacular -10.
His 61 shots are a personal best: the previous record was 63 in the second round of the AT & T Byron Nelson.
Alex Noren, Bermuda Championship 2023
Noren was certainly helped by the simple conditions, on a day that ended in darkness with only a few golfers left to finish.
In second place with -8 an all-USA quartet made up of Vince Whaley, Robert Garrigus, Dylan Wu and D.J. Trahan. The group of sixth places at -7 is very large: together with the Japanese Satoshi Kodaira and the German Matti Schmid there are the veteran Stewart Cink, Davis Riley, Ryan Brehm, Ryan Gerard, Austin Smotherman and D.A.
Points. Of them, Cink has some regrets and Gerard even more so, who without a double bogey (for one) and a double bogey-bogey combination (for the other) would have put on paper a -9 and a -10 . But this is also the day on which Adam Long decided to set another record.
Already capable of being the first player in 31 years to hit every single fairway at the Shriners Children’s Open, here he finishes 26th at -5 the first 18 holes, but it matters little: he extends the sequence to 69, well exceeding the 59 which were by Brian Claar.
