Andy Murray has accepted to compete at the Bordeaux Challenger leading up to the French Open. Murray, 35, will be making his debut on the clay courts of Bordeaux. Murray, who didn’t play much on clay after sustaining a major hip injury in 2017, decided to play again during the clay season in 2023.
Murray officially kicked off his 2023 season at the Monte Carlo Masters and he is also set to compete at this week’s Madrid Masters. After Madrid, Murray will go to Bordeaux for a clay Challenger tournament – which is taking place between May 14-20.

Murray admitted to feeling ‘demoralized’ after his first match on clay
In his first clay match of the year, Murray suffered a brutal 6-1 6-3 loss to Alex de Minaur.
“It was awful. Nothing was good about it. I don’t know exactly why that was. Obviously I didn’t play a great match in Miami. And this was worse than that. I didn’t do anything well, didn’t serve well, return well, forehands, backhands, shot selection.
It was one of the worst I’ve played in my career, probably. I had a match like that last year in Doha against (Roberto) Bautista (Agut) that was pretty bad and maybe one or two others in my career, but in terms of how I felt on the court, it was right up there, just across the board,” Murray said after his Monte Carlo exit.
Murray was pretty dejected after being destroyed by de Minaur as he didn’t expect to lose that easily. “I was feeling optimistic coming into the clay. I’d been feeling good with my body the last 10 days or so considering I’ve not played much on it.
I was feeling good and I’d actually been moving pretty well in practice, so I was optimistic. But it was pretty demoralising and I’ve not felt like that many times in my career on the court. It was really tough,” Murray said. It remains to be seen if Murray can bounce back and do better in the remainder of the clay season.
