Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber will be starting her post-pregnancy comeback to tennis at the United Cup. Kerber, 35, announced her pregnancy shortly after 2022 Wimbledon. In February, Kerber welcomed her first child.
Over the last couple of months, Kerber has been working on preparing to play again in 2024. Now, Kerber’s first tournament of the 2024 season is confirmed as the former world No 1 is set to represent Germany in the second edition of the United Cup.
Germany will have a strong United Cup team as Alexander Zverev is also set to play at the United Cup.
Kerber confirms her comeback is starting at the United Cup
In January, Kerber will be turning 36 and playing again after being sidelined for a year and a half.
Kerber’s comeback will start at an event where some of the biggest names of the game have confirmed their presence. “The United Cup holds a unique position in global tennis, with the world’s best men and women representing their country at the highest level.
For 2024 we are delighted to welcome teams with both massive star power and great depth. The top 16 teams include some of the biggest names in tennis, such as Djokovic, Swiatek, Tsitsipas, Pegula, Fritz, Sakkari, De Minaur, Tomljanovic, Zverev, Kerber and more.
They are all set to play in a format designed to showcase both the men’s and women’s game and the unique equality in tennis. We can’t wait to see some exciting match-ups between such a high calibre playing field, and lots of entertaining tennis in what promises to be a blockbuster event,” United Cup tournament director Stephen Farrow said.
Meanwhile, Kerber is serious about her comeback. In September, it was revealed that Kerber hired her ex-coach Torben Beltz. In the past, Beltz worked with Kerber and guided the German to her first two Grand Slam titles in 2016. It remains to be seen how well can Kerber do when she returns to tennis.
