Arsenal vs Brentford predictions

In the end, last weekend was not as damaging as it might have been for Arsenal.

A 1-0 defeat by Everton in the early kick-off on Saturday left the club’s fans fearing the worst ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur a day later.

But Pep Guardiola’s men once again came unstuck away to Spurs, who ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Harry Kane’s 200th Premier League goal.

City were then hit with the unwelcome news that they have been charged by the Premier League for breaching its financial rules.

That investigation is a distraction that could help Arsenal in the title race, especially as City have been far from their best on the pitch of late.

The Gunners now have the chance to move eight points clear of their closest rivals, who will lock horns with Aston Villa on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta should not expect this to be a straightforward assignment, however.

Brentford have gone nine games unbeaten in the top flight, with City, Tottenham and Liverpool among their opponents in that run. They are up to seventh in the standings and may yet challenge for European qualification.

Thomas Frank’s side are a tough nut to crack and Arsenal will not have everything their own way this weekend.

Arsenal vs Brentford betting tips

Arsenal have a formidable record in front of their own fans at the Emirates Stadium, but this could be a tough game for Arteta and co.

Arsenal win by one goal – 12/5 (Spreadex)

The Emirates has become a happy place for Arsenal again.

Last season, Arteta’s side collected more points at home than anyone but Liverpool and Manchester City, the two title contenders.

This time around they are doing even better in front of their own supporters. No team in the division has a better points-per-game home record than Arsenal’s 2.78.

The Gunners have won eight of their nine matches at the Emirates, with the exception being a goalless draw with Newcastle United in December.

Arsenal have been pretty reliable on the road too, accumulating seven more points than next-best Tottenham at opposition stadiums.

But their title tilt has been built on a formidable home record which has made the Emirates a tough place to go again.

Having said that, Brentford have the qualities to make this a difficult afternoon for Arsenal. As demonstrated by a nine-match unbeaten streak, they are not an easy side to defeat.

The Bees have only lost four games all season – fewer than Tottenham and Manchester United, and the same number as Manchester City.

Arsenal should get over the line on Saturday afternoon, but it is unlikely to be by a sizable margin.

Both teams to score – 10/11 (Spreadex)

Brentford’s physicality, competitiveness and organisation is one reason why Arsenal will not necessarily be in for a straightforward 90 minutes in this London derby.

Frank’s team rank seventh in the Premier League for expected goals against, which shows it is not easy to create chances against them.

But Brentford also offer plenty in attack. Whether Frank opts for a front three or a front two, the Bees are capable of asking questions of the Arsenal backline.

Brentford have failed to score in just five matches this term, a record bettered by just five of their top-flight rivals.

They have drawn a blank just once in their last nine outings and put three goals past an admittedly poor Southampton side last time out.

As for Arsenal, it is hard to see them failing to find the back of the net on Saturday.

Granted, they were below par as an attacking force in the loss to Sean Dyche’s Everton last weekend, but it is hard to see a repeat here.

Arsenal are averaging 2.78 goals per home game this term and Brentford will have their hands full in dealing with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah.

Draw at half-time – 11/8 (Spreadex)

After the defeat at Goodison Park, Arteta will be keen to see a fast start from his players on Saturday.

Arsenal host Manchester City on Wednesday and a confident win here would be a major statement of intent ahead of that crunch clash.

It would also pile the pressure on City before then, with the champions potentially being eight points adrift of top spot by the time they do battle with Aston Villa.

If Arsenal score in the opening 15 minutes, they have the quality to blow Brentford away.

But if the Bees can keep things tight in the first quarter of an hour and avoid an early concession, Arsenal may have to remain patient in their search for a breakthrough.

As we have discussed above, Brentford are often stubborn, obdurate opponents who can make life tough for the bigger teams.

That is particularly the case at the Gtech Community Stadium, but only Arsenal and Newcastle have lost fewer away games this term, and the scores have been level at the interval in exactly half of Brentford’s matches on the road.

Given how well they have played this season, it would not be a surprise if Arsenal registered a handsome victory this weekend.

But we envisage a tighter game and this selection, like the two above, reflects that overarching prediction.
