“Being ATP no.2 is a fantastic feeling”

Jannik Sinner is the tennis player of 2024: the results reward his fantastic improvements, which had already begun and were evident in 2023, but which definitively exploded in these first three months of 2024.

Jannik dominated Grigor Dimitrov, winning the Miami Open final, at the 3rd attempt of his career.

And the victory could only be celebrated with his sober words and the usual humility that distinguishes this young champion, shared at the press conference.

“I’m very proud of the result, I started the week suffering a little, I didn’t have much time to adapt to these courts but as the tournament continued I always felt better. And I’m proud of how I handled those situations,” he told.

A journalist points out to him the exceptional numbers of this season, with 3 tournaments won and only one defeat in Indian Wells with Carlos Alcaraz.

“What happened is, I try to improve and I try to appreciate the moment I’m living in. I don’t know if this is the last time I experience this situation and enjoy it. Now the clay comes and everything will be different. But certainly this part of the season on hard has been excellent,” he explained.
Sinner also praised Grigor Dimitrov during the on-court interview.

“It’s so nice to see you playing at this level, you’ve played a lot and worked a lot, it’s nice not only to play but to talk to you. You have a fantastic team and there’s a lot of work behind these results,” said Jannik, who then his team, led by Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, was also praised.

“I thank my team, we work every day, we try to learn and these results are wonderful to share with you. And with people who are starting to know me a little more. Thanks to tournament director James Blake. This is one of the best tournaments and I thank everyone who makes it possible.

And finally the atmosphere was beautiful for all these 10 days, for me it is one of the most important tournaments, it was nice to come back and I hope to see you again next year,” he explained.

Sinner then commented at the press conference on the victory obtained against Dimitrov, which earned him number 2 in the ATP world ranking.

“It definitely means a lot to me. Although it is more important to think about the great performances in the semi-finals and finals. Being the ATP no. 2 is an amazing feeling. I never thought I would get to this point. I come from a very normal family.

My father is still working, as is my mother. For me sport is one thing and life is another. I am very happy to be in this position. I’m just enjoying every moment. These are special days to win a tournament,” he explained.

The Italian then talked about the ability to manage these types of situations, which naturally add further pressure.

“Maybe in the future I will manage them even better, I don’t know. But my personality today is really trying to stay calm. On the other hand you must never sit down, you must attack. If I lose the game by attacking and trying to win it, that’s better for me than standing back and seeing what might happen. I have to stay mentally focused in every situation. A lot can happen on the court,” he analyzed.

Having reached the No. 2 spot in the ATP ranking, which no other Italian player has ever achieved in the history of tennis, was not among the objectives set so quickly by the 22-year-old Italian and his staff, as he himself confirmed.

“I certainly didn’t expect it, I’d be lying if I told you otherwise. I felt ready to do well this year, because I had a great offseason and a great season finale last year. Beating Novak twice was important for me.

There were weeks in which I was really consistent, between Beijing, Vienna, the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup. As for me, I felt ready to achieve great results. Every tournament I entered I felt I had a good solution to play well. I also love playing on hard courts, which gives me this extra confidence,” he added.
