Bob Myers contract situation ‘hot topic’ in Clippers’ front office

Report: Myers’ situation ‘hot topic’ in Clippers’ front office originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

As Warriors general manager and president of basketball operations Bob Myers enters the final months of his contract that expires in June, other NBA teams are monitoring the situation.

Anthony Slater, Marcus Thompson II and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported Wednesday, citing sources, that people around Myers are beginning to wonder if his days with the Warriors are numbered.

If Myers left Golden State but remained in the NBA, the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks reportedly are teams that are possible landing spots for the man behind just about every move that built the Warriors’ dynasty.

However, the one team that could present the biggest threat to swipe Myers is the Los Angeles Clippers.

“Meanwhile, the recent focus in front office circles, where Myers’ situation has become a hot topic, is on the Clippers,” The Athletic reported. “They have the richest owner in all of professional sports in Steve Ballmer, the 66-year-old former Microsoft CEO with an $83 billion net worth who has taken the blank-check approach to his title pursuit since buying the team in 2014.”

Besides Ballmer’s ability to tell Myers to name his asking price, the Clippers owner could present the architect of four NBA championships in the past eight seasons with the chance to work in a city he knows well.

“Myers’ roots run deep in the Los Angeles area,” The Athletic reported. “He played at UCLA, earned his law degree at Loyola Law School and was a prominent agent at the LA-based Wasserman Media Group before joining the Warriors as an assistant general manager in 2011. Yet, while Ballmer’s injury-riddled team has been a disappointment so far in this Kawhi LeonardPaul George era, a source with knowledge of the Clippers’ operation pushed back on the widely discussed Myers possibility.”

The Clippers are scheduled to move into a new arena, the Intuit Dome, for the 2024-25 NBA season in Inglewood as the team escapes from the Los Angeles Lakers’ shadow. However, if Ballmer endures another playoff disappointment, he could tap Myers to lead the new era of Clippers basketball.

While the Warriors have made their offers to keep Myers, he holds the leverage on where he wants to continue his career, whether in the Bay or elsewhere.
