Brooklyn Nets ‘comfortable’ offering RFA Cam Johnson 4-year, $84 million deal

Now that the Brooklyn Nets have finished their 2023 NBA Draft, they can move on to other matters that they have to address this offseason. One of those matters, arguably the most important, is wing Cam Johnson’s restricted free-agency.

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, those around the league that are following Johnson’s free-agency closely believe that the Nets will be comfortable offering Johnson a four-year, $84 million contract once free-agency opens. Since Johnson is a restricted free-agent, other teams can extend an offer sheet to Johnson, but Brooklyn has the ability to match the offer sheet, increasing their ability to keep the former North Carolina Tar Heel on the roster.

Begley also says that the teams interested in Johnson’s services, as has been reported by multiple people throughout this offseason, are the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons. One thing to keep in mind is that it was reported earlier in the offseason that the Nets are expected to match any offer sheet for Johnson as long as it’s “realistic.” Here’s more of what Begley had to say about Johnson’s free-agency:

“The biggest decision facing Brooklyn this offseason will start on June 30 (at) 6pm… People following his (Cam Johnson) free agency believe the Nets will be comfortable offering Johnson a four year deal worth north of $84 million dollars… People following Johnson’s free agency believe that a team will step up and offer Johnson a big time offer sheet. Whether it’s Houston, who he’s been tied to through various reports, or Detroit, who NBA reporter Marc Stein tied Johnson to recently. They (the people following Johnson’s free-agency) feel that a team is going to step up (to) sign Johnson to that offer sheet and force the Nets to match that offer sheet. Now, I would assume that Nets match it because they acquired Johnson in the Kevin Durant trade with Phoenix.”
