Chelsea to get huge cut of £35m Tino Livramento sale to Newcastle

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Tino Livramento from Southampton for a fee of up to £35 million.

The transfer will also provide a significant financial boost to Livramento’s former club Chelsea who are due 50 per cent of the profit from any sell-on.

Having sold the 20-year-old to Southampton for £4million in 2021 it would suggest Chelsea are due at least £13million and up to £15.5million on the deal with Newcastle.

Newcastle will pay an initial £30million for the right-back with up to £5million due in add-ons should certain targets be met.

The pursuit of Livramento has been surprising given Newcastle have one of the best right-backs in the Premier League in their captain, Kieran Trippier.

However, Trippier is 33 and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe regards Livramento as an exciting long-term successor to the England international. At the same time Trippier can also play at left-back, as he has done successfully for his country.

Livramento is still recovering his full fitness after being out for more than a year with an anterior cruciate ligament tear and needs to be brought back gradually into playing regular football.

The Croydon-born England Under-21 international has not started a game since April 2022, when he suffered his knee injury against Brighton. He left Chelsea in search of regular first-team football, as he was behind Cesar Azpilicueta and Reece James, and to progress his career.

Southampton had rejected Newcastle’s offer of £30million – which included add-ons – but an improved bid has led to negotiations being resumed ahead of the relegated club kicking off their Championship campaign against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening.

Southampton have so fought off bids for two more of their stars – captain James Ward-Prowse who is wanted by West Ham United and Romeo Lavia who Liverpool are pursuing – but are likely to come under more pressure to sell before the transfer window closes.
