Chicago TV News Crew Robbed At Gunpoint During Segment On Robberies In The City

Crime in the liberal-run city of Chicago has been completely out of control in recent years. This was shown once again on Monday, when a television news crew was robbed at gunpoint, ironically while covering a string of robberies in the area.

Chicago News Crew Robbed

The Associated Press reported that a reporter and cameraman with the Spanish-language station Univision Chicago were filming just before 5am in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood when they were approached by three masked men carrying guns who emerged from two vehicles.

The masked men demanded money from the pair before entering their SUV and stealing their television camera as well as two bags containing equipment and a backpack belonging to the photographer, according to The Chicago Sun Times.

“They were approached with guns and robbed. Mainly it was personal items, and they took a camera,” said Luis Godinez, vice president of news at Univision Chicago. “Gratefully, the crew is safe.”

Godinez went on to say that the crew was trying to film a story about a series of robberies in the West Town area that had been scheduled to run on the news that very morning. The story ended up not making it to air, however, because all of the footage that had been shot for it was on the stolen television camera.

“They’re OK, and we’re working on it together as a team,” Godinez continued, adding that the names of the reporter and cameraman are not being disclosed for their own protection. He would only say that both the reporter and the cameraman were males.

Police said that nobody was injured in this robbery, and no suspects are in custody.

Second Robbery Of This Kind This Month In Chicago

This marks the second time a member of the media was robbed in Chicago in this month alone. On August 8, a WLS-TV photographer was both assaulted and robbed while covering a weekday afternoon news conference taking place on Chicago’s West Side.

The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Local 41, which represents TV photographers in Chicago, has responded to these two incidents with a statement warning of the growing threat towards members of the media in the Illinois city.

“Our news photographers and reporters provide a very important public service in keeping our community informed. We are committed to making sure that their safety comes first,” said Raza Siddiqui, president of the union local.

Siddiqui went on to say that the union is arranging a safety meeting for members to “voice some of their concerns that they may have from the streets,” and to see what the union can do to support its members.

“We want to make sure that we provide a longer-lasting solution that we work not only with management but our members, and make sure that we read some protocols that everyone is happy with and feels can be a workable solution,” Siddiqui explained.

Chicago Crime

Alderman Scott Waguespack of the 32nd Ward told ABC7 that the robberies in this area of Chicago are only getting more brazen and violent.

“I know people want us to just chase every criminal, but when it gets to a situation where it’s a liability of not only on the city but the issue of hurting other pedestrians or drivers, you have to be very careful,” Waguespack said. “I think the brazenness of these criminals has gone behind the pale.”

“We also need people up on top to say, ‘The criminality has to stop.’ And, I’m talking about the mayor,” he added.

Crime in Chicago has only gotten more out of control as of late, with Fox 32 reporting that there have been 707 vehicular hijackings since the start of 2023. From the beginning of the year through the end of July, 1,722 people were shot in Chicago, and there were 363 murders in the city.

The current situation in Chicago serves as a grim reminder of what happens when liberals are given control over a city. If Chicago residents want to start living in a safer city, they might want to consider voting some conservatives into power.
