Comerica Park to host Crystal Palace and Sevilla in July soccer match

European soccer is returning to Comerica Park this summer.

Crystal Palace, of the English Premier League, will take on Sevilla, from Spain’s LaLiga, in an exhibition at Comerica Park at 7 p.m. on July 30.

This won’t be the first time that two European clubs have taken the field at Comerica, as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and AS Roma played in Detroit in July 2017.

“We are thrilled to have international soccer return to Comerica Park for a match between two elite football clubs,” Howard Handler, 313 Presents president, said in a statement. “This matchup will provide metro Detroit’s soccer fans a unique opportunity to watch their favorite European clubs play once again in person.”

While there won’t be as many big names as there were when PSG and Roma hit the pitch, these teams certainly bring some prestige. Crystal Palace faces top teams such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United on a weekly basis. As of Friday, Crystal Palace was in 12th place with three games to play, well safe from relegation to a lower league.

Palace is coached by Roy Hodgson, the former England men’s national team manager, and has U.S. national team player Chris Richards.

“We are absolutely delighted to return to the US for the first time since 2016,” said Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish in a statement. “We have so many loyal supporters Stateside who regularly visit us in London, and even more who wake up early every weekend to watch on NBC — so it will be fantastic to play in front of them all against such strong opposition this July.”

As for Sevilla, they are the second oldest team in LaLiga (dating back to 1890) and are one of Spain’s biggest clubs.

Sevilla boasts big names such as Jesús Navas, Croatian star Ivan Rakitić and three players from Argentina’s World Cup-winning team: Marcos Acuña, Papu Gómez and Gonzalo Montiel.

Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but will be available through 313 Presents’ website eventually.
