Cyclist left dangling from a bridge as dozens of riders are involved in pile up at the Star of Besseges race as stage is later abandoned

A cyclist was left hanging from a bridge after dozens of riders were caught up in a crash at the Star of Besseges in France.

The second stage of the five-day event had to be neutralised when numerous riders were involved in a pile up 22 kilometres from the finish line.

The debris of fallen bikes and riders was so bad that Valentin Ferron of Total Energies was left dangling by his arms from the side of a bridge with a pile of bikes blocking his route back to the road.

With accidents everywhere bottlenecked into the narrow bridge, footage showed others approaching, only to themselves crash as they tried to avoid the fallout.

There were fortunately no serious injuries despite multiple riders requiring treatment, which meant that there were no medical teams or ambulances left in service.

The peloton was stopped for 20 minutes before they began riding again, but an announcement soon went out ending the day’s action.

Organisers deemed it unsafe to continue the stage with all medical personnel already deployed, meaning no one was available to deal with any potential further accidents.

The day ended with a stage winner undeclared for the 170 kilometre Bagard to Aubais stretch of the race.

That means stage one winner Arnaud De Lie of Belgium maintains his lead heading into stage three on Friday.
