Nick Kyrgios admits he is very disappointed over being forced to skip this week’s Citi Open in Washington. Kyrgios, 28, won his first Washington title in 2019 before winning it all at the tournament again last year. But this week, Kyrgios isn’t defending his title on the hard courts of Washington after sustaining a wrist ligament injury last month.
Kyrgios has made four Washington appearances so far in his career and this year his goal was to lift his third title at the tournament.“Washington, gonna be tough to miss you this year. Was gonna go for 3 time champ. Always amazing memories.
If you are there you will be able to see my name up in the stadium court,” Kyrgios wrote on his Instagram Story.
Kyrgios again sidelined
After undergoing knee surgery and playing his first tournament of the season in Stuttgart, Kyrgios suffered another blow when he contracted a wrist injury.
Since Stuttgart, Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from multiple events – Halle, Mallorca, Wimbledon, the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, and now Washington.“Hey everyone, I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year.
I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.
I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon. I’ll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans,” Kyrgios announced just hours before the start of Wimbledon.After withdrawing from Washington, Kyrgios also pulled out of the Toronto Masters on Monday. Kyrgios’ next hope remains that he will be able to participate at the Cincinnati Masters, which starts on August 13th.
