Ex-Celtic Isaiah Thomas responds to John Wall’s 2017 Wizards take

Former Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas couldn’t help but laugh at John Wall’s bold statement about the 2016-17 Washington Wizards.

Wall, a five-time All-Star with Washington from 2010-19, was asked which Wizards team he played on had the best chance to win an NBA title. Without hesitation, he chose the Wizards group that fell to Thomas and the Celtics in seven games during the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Forsberg: On Jacob Poeltl and the Celtics’ trade deadline dilemma

“We was going to beat the (expletive) out of LeBron. That was one team they didn’t want to see in the East. They did not want to see us,” Wall said on the “Run Your Race” podcast.

“Me and Kyrie [Irving], we matching up. I’m taking Brad [Beal] over J.R. [Smith]. You got Bron over Trevor Ariza. I’m taking you know who. Kevin Love and Markieff Morris, I’m taking Kevin Love, but Markieff Morris can shoot threes and post up. I’m taking [Marcin] Gortat over Tristan Thompson, and our bench was deeper than theirs.”

Thomas responded to Wall’s remarks with a  simple “Lol.”

That C’s-Wizards series solidified Thomas’ status as one of the most beloved Celtics of the generation. Thomas averaged 27.4 points and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from 3-point range. He scored 53 points — the second-most in franchise playoff history — in Boston’s Game 2 overtime win.

Thomas understands where Wall was coming from, but he believes the point is moot since the No. 1 seed Celtics stood in Washington’s way.

“lol that’s my dawg! I get what he saying. they def matched up better with the cavs that year. They just wasn’t getting passed us,” Thomas tweeted.

The Celtics went on to fall to the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games, so Wall has good reason to wonder what could’ve been. There was just no stopping Thomas during his magical postseason run before a hip injury sidelined him for the final three games of the Eastern Conference Finals.
