The season of Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini began with the desire to return to compete with the strongest tennis players on the planet in the most prestigious tournaments of the ATP Tour.

The Italian, present at the ATP Challenger in Tenerife to start over after the physical problems of the last two months, gave news that worried his fans. The already injured calf was not yet well healed and Fabio was defeated in the second round.

Now, the Italian himself has given the news on social media that the fans were not hoping for: more problems, another stop. Fognini published a post on Instagram in which he explains that he is forced to give up the next scheduled tournament to return to Italy and undergo some calf tests.

“Hi guys, unfortunately I’m forced to cancel from the next tournament: I will return to Italy and undergo tests hoping that my calf hasn’t played any tricks and, therefore, to return to the court soon. I appreciate your support in a difficult start to the season for me,” wrote the Italian. The hope is to be able to see him back on the pitch as soon as possible.

Fognini is trying to overcome his physical problems

The success at the Valencia Challenger in November against Bautista Agut was a small but important step in gaining confidence and familiarity with the field, returning to lift a trophy to the sky after four years of abstinence.

It seemed like the end of that nightmare period that dragged Fabio out of the Top 100 for the first time after 708 consecutive weeks, made up of negative results, injuries and controversies with the national coach Filippo Volandri.

But unfortunately the following week the problems return to visit the 36-year-old Italian, forced to withdraw from the Challenger in Maia, Portugal, due to a calf problem. A significant injury, which compromises Fognini’s preparation for the Australian Open and forces him into a painful withdrawal.
