Sunday’s final acts as a huge stepping stone in the club’s respective projects, with both teams arguably exceeding expectations along their journeys so far.

In Manchester, Erik ten Hag took over a United side that had just finished sixth in the Premier League, 13 points off the top four and 36 behind champions Manchester City.

Just over 12 months on, Eddie Howe’s side are in the Carabao Cup final, 90 minutes from winning the club their first piece of silverware since 1955, and have the team firmly in contention for the battle for the top four in the league.

Newcastle have lost just twice in the league this season, fewer than any other team, and currently sit fifth in the table, a point behind Tottenham having also played a game fewer.

The Magpies are, however, four league games without a win heading into the Wembley clash, and have lost four of their last six meetings with Man United without victory.
