Brazil look like a force to be reckoned with this tournament and remain the favourites to win what would be a record sixth World Cup trophy.
Brazil won their opening two group games against Serbia and Switzerland to qualify to become one of just three teams to qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare, and dismantled South Korea 4-1 in the last 16.
Goals from Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta in the space of 30 first half minutes secured a place in the last eight and confirmed the Selecao as favourites to win their first World Cup since 2002.
Croatia, their opponents on Friday, required penalties to knock out an entertaining Japanese side who had already got the better of Germany and Spain in the group stage.
Ivan Perisic’s header cancelled out Japan’s opener but Dominik Livakovic was the hero in the shootout, saving three penalties as Croatia won 3-1 to progress to the last eight for the third time in their short history.
Zlatko Dalic’s side were the only team who finished as a runner up in the group stage to make it to the quarter finals, but history does not favour them as Brazil have won the last three matches between the side, with Croats not winning in any of the four meetings.
Neymar and Roberto Firmino were on the scoresheet the last time the two sides met, in a friendly at Anfield in preparation for the 2018 World Cup.
