‘He’s no Thomas Partey’ – Jorginho’s Arsenal debut analysed as comparison to Liverpool star Thiago made

Jorginho made his Arsenal debut from the bench against Everton in a tough loss for Mikel Arteta – but it was one to forget.

The Italy international made a Deadline Day switch from Chelsea to Arsenal with the north London side chasing down a first Premier League title in 20 years.

He was named among the substitutes against Everton on Saturday afternoon and was brought on to replace Thomas Partey after 59 minutes.

But just 60 seconds later, the Toffees took the lead through James Tarkowski to win the match and see Sean Dyche claim victory in his first game in charge.

While Jorginho was not at fault for the goal, which came from a corner , the 31-year-old is a completely different style of midfielder to Partey.

And former Sunderland star Micky Gray reckons that he is more like Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara, and that may not be ideal for the Gunners.

He told Sam Matterface while on co-commentary fo talkSPORT: “A comparison I can give you, Sam, is Thiago for Liverpool.

“He’s very similar in the way that he is fantastic on the ball, he can see a pass. He plays the game at his own pace.

“But when you haven’t got the ball, has he got enough in the legs and the tank to help out the way Arsenal play?

“He brings a different dimension, he has his own skills and his own qualities. But he’s not Thomas Partey.”

Arsenal had the lion’s share of possession against Everton but failed to create any big chances to truly test Jordan Pickford.

Ultimately, some brilliant defending from Everton meant the Gunners could not equalise.

The defeat now gives Man City the chance to cut the gap at the top to two points.

Pep Guardiola’s men take on Tottenham on Sunday, where Arsenal will ironically be cheering on their biggest rivals to get a result.

And Arteta has tried his best to rally his charges already.

He said: “Today I love them much better than the week before or a month ago.

“It is easy to be next to someone when they are winning well. I am still so proud of all of these players, they deserve it.

“This is not going to be a rose pathway. This is going to be tricky and we will have to dig in and play much better than we did today.”
