The Ryder Cup is a biennial golf tournament pitting teams from Europe and the United States against each other. After more than 45 years of American dominance (the British only won the trophy once between 1935 and 1973), the British team was joined by players from Ireland in 1973, and later also by players from the rest of Europe thanks to Severiano Ballesteros, who He convinced the British Isles to include the rest of the European countries (starting in 1979).
