Ian Poulter launches club in locker room and aims subtle dig at Rory McIlroy as trailer for ‘Full Swing’ series on Netflix is released and premiere date revealed

Ian Poulter looks set to play a starring role in the upcoming ‘Full Swing’ series on Netflix.

The creators of Formula 1’s ‘Drive to Survive’ have turned their attention to golf’s PGA Tour for their latest TV project.

Cameras were given exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the best golfers in the world during a blockbuster 2022 season.

Netflix released the first trailer for the documentary on Wednesday and revealed the show will come out on February 15.

The first sneak-peak shows a possible glimpse into the PGA Tour’s feud with LIV Golf – which has consumed the sport for the last 12 months.

Poulter is among a number of players who signed up for the documentary before defecting to the Saudi-backed breakaway league and subsequently got banned by the PGA Tour.

The Englishman was briefly part of an anti-trust lawsuit against the Tour before deciding to drop out.

At one point in the trailer, Poulter is shown throwing a golf club in the locker room, although the reason why is unclear.

A fan on Twitter asked who the culprit was and Poulter replied: “I tried to rip my shirt open 😉 but I wasn’t quite strong enough for that. So I tried the next best thing. Felt great.”

This appears to be a cheeky dig at Rory McIlroy – who ripped his shirt open after a DP World Tour event in November 2021.

Poulter and McIlroy have been close friends over the years, forming a prolific Ryder Cup partnership, but they stand on opposite sides in golf’s civil war.

World No.1 McIlroy has been the PGA Tour’s biggest ambassador, taking the fight to LIV Golf himself.

He has publicly said LIV rebels Poulter, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson should not be considered for Ryder Cup selection.

Poulter has not gone away quietly, turning up to DP World Tour events after winning a court hearing over his suspension and complaining about his treament by the European-based circuit.

Most recently, the 47-year-old hit out at the DP World Tour, who run Europe’s Ryder Cup team, for not wishing him ‘happy birthday’.

Tweeting on his birthday earlier this week, Poulter replied to a Team Europe video: “What’s really an “incredible touch” is the Players that helped build the @RyderCupEurope Brand with other players as well. You just can’t bring yourself to say a simple Happy Birthday. @TheSergioGarcia B’day Yesterday. Unfortunately this says so much.”
