I’m all day for trash talk on court, traditional tennis is too polite

Paula Badosa says she is all in for normalizing trash talk in tennis but noted she is unsure whether the women “could take that.” Following their Miami Open doubles win, Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula said introducing trash talk to tennis would probably make the game more interesting and bring in new fans.

“I’m in. Yeah, I mean I’m all day talking trash on the court, but no, I mean, it would be totally different. We’re not used to that. I mean, traditionally tennis is, it’s very, like, polite, but why not? It’s a new generation, it could be a change and it could be different and fun.

But I don’t know if women could take that. Like maybe they take a little bit more personally, but on men’s side, like, I can see it for sure. On, anything, I mean. First thing that comes to my mind,” Badosa said on Tennis Channel.

Badosa defeated Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday

Meanwhile, Badosa was in action on Wednesday in Charleston. Badosa and Fernandez played an extremely tight match but the Spaniard was able to win in two sets 7-5 7-6 (6). In the first set, Fernandez had a 4-2 lead before Badosa earned breaks in the seventh and 11th games to overturn the deficit and win the opener.

After winning a tight first set, Badosa broke Fernandez in the very game of the second set. Down by a set and a break, Fernandez refused to quit as she broke back Badosa in the eighth game to eventually send the set into a tie-break.

In the second-set tie-break, Badosa saved a set point before converting her first match point to complete a two-set win. It was the third meeting between Badosa and Fernandez. Now, Badosa owns a 3-0 head-to-head against Fernandez.

Previously, Badosa defeated Fernandez in the 2020 Auckland qualifying and 2022 Indian Wells. So far, so good for Badosa against Fernandez.
