Inside Erling Haaland’s phenomenal season, but Man City star doesn’t care about legendary record and would trade all the goals for the treble

Erling Haaland might be plundering goals for fun but there is only one thing on his mind – the next match.

In his debut season, Haaland has broken the record for most goals scored in the Premier League in one campaign.

And the Norway international did so with the most delicate of touches, lofting the ball over West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski to make it 2-0 to City.

Speaking on talkSPORT about his goal, ex-City and West Ham star Trevor Sinclair compared him to Premier League legend Ian Wright.

Alongside Sam Matterface on co-commentary, he said: “A sublime dink over the goalkeeper. Something I can imagine Ian Wright doing.

He goes into his little yoga pose. 51 goals in the season, 35 in the league. Some season this kid is having.

“It’s ludicrous. He could end up getting to 60 easily.”

Getting 60 in the league and 63 overall would see Haaland draw level with Dixie Dean’s record that he got with Everton in 1928 – something that has never been seriously tested.

But the Manchester City star is not bothered about landing that number, instead turning his attention to Leeds at the weekend.

“I don’t think about this,” the 22-year-old said. “I’m going to wake up tomorrow and think about trying to getting three points against Leeds.

“We cannot keep thinking about these records, I would become crazy in my head. I will go home, play some video games, eat something and then sleep.

“We cannot think about the FA Cup now against Manchester United, we play Leeds in three days. You have to think about the next game.”

It’s been a stunning season for Haaland on a personal level but with Man City chasing the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, Haaland would trade all the goals for those three trophies.

Asked if he’d trade his goals for the treble, Haaland said: “Yes, it [the treble] really is [the priority].”

It is just another highlight to add to one of the most spectacular years ever seen by a striker in the Premier League – with still so much more to come.

Haaland arrived with big expectations in the summer following a £51million move from Borussia Dortmund.

A noble response from a player who plays a position that typically sees the selfish thrive but at this stage we can’t tell if City will taste treble glory.

So for now it’s all about Haaland as we take a deeper look into what’s already been a phenomenal season for him.

Haaland arrived with big expectations in the summer following a £51million move from Borussia Dortmund.

But he has far exceeded those already by blasting all sorts of goalscoring records from every angle, starting with a bang in August.

His tally of nine in the opening month of the season was a record of the Premier League – a sign of things to come – and he did not slow down there.

The Leeds-born ace scored in seven straight league games from August to October, including hat-tricks against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

In all competitions, he extended his goalscoring streak to ten, netting 18 in total while his fourth hat-trick of the season against Wolves in January put him one behind Alan Shearer for most hat-tricks in one term.

In the Champions League, Haaland has scored 12 in eight appearances – five coming in a 7-0 demolition of RB Leipzig – and in total, he has 51 goals to his name this season in all competitions.

Haaland’s first FA Cup goals came with a hat-trick in the 6-0 quarter-final win over Burnley, having sat out the clash with Chelsea and not scoring against Arsenal.

With at least eight matches left in the season, the Norwegian will fully back himself to break the all-time single-season English goalscoring record, held by Dean with 63, not that it matters to him.
