Paolo Bertolucci, former Italian tennis star, focused on the victory of Jannik Sinner at the Montepellier tournament, in the editorial written for the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. Bertolucci analyzed: “In Montpellier, Jannik confirmed that he feels particularly good on the fast indoor surfaces, and that he knows how to seize opportunities when he finds himself in the small audience of favorites for an appointment, a sign that he doesn’t suffer from the pressure.
At this point the question arises: what does Jannik lack to go from a relentless player in lower level tournaments to a war machine even in the 1000 and Grand Slams? In France, we admired a player who was really close to completeness: perfect management of his rounds of service, reading ability in the return, careful use of the short ball, while the rival’s characteristics forced him to spend very little time in the net.
Now it’s just a matter of doing something more in everything he has learned and metabolised: even more incisive service, continuity in return games, wise choices when it comes to varying the pace with the short ball, quick solutions when the tactical frame will request it.”
Jannik’s start of the season
After reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open, Jannik Sinner returned to action at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier.
The blue tennis player did not have to play his second round match due to the sudden forfeit by Marton Fucsovics and started from the quarterfinals. The South Tyrolean dominated the Italian derby with Lorenzo Sonego and then got rid of Arthur Fils in two sets in the semifinal.
In the last act of the French event, Sinner made the difference in the important moments of the match and defeated Maxime Cressy with a score of 7-6(3) , 6-3. In the first half of the game, the Italian recovered from 0-40 in the fourth game and closed the tie-break with authority which allowed him to take the lead.
In the second part, however, the break signed at 4-3 opened the doors to the seventh title of his career. Sinner has gained three positions in the ranking, he is currently number 14 in the world, thanks to the success achieved in Montpellier.
