The American veteran John Isner will not compete at the upcoming Rome Masters. The 38-year-old and his wife, Madison McKinley, welcomed their fourth child recently, and John wants to spend more time with his family before returning to action.
Isner has played 11 matches in 2023, reducing his schedule and dropping out from the top-50 for the first time since 2009 and 686 consecutive weeks!
John scored 23 victories in 2022, enough to remain in the top-50 for another season.
However, he has won only four matches in 2023, struggling to find the form and dropping out from the top-50 for the first time in 13 and a half years! After four tremendous years at the University of Georgia, Isner was ready to chase pro success.
John played his first ATP final in Washington in the summer of 2007, just a week after conquering Lexington Challenger. The Greensboro native gained over 500 places on the ATP list in 14 days and cracked the top-100 in February 2008.

He stayed away from that group for almost a year before returning in June 2009, never leaving the elite 100 again. Improving every element of his game and working hard to achieve his best tennis, Isner has competed in 31 ATP finals, winning 16 titles and claiming the biggest in Miami five years ago.
John won 30 or more ATP matches every year between 2010 and 2019 and qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time in a career in 2018 at 33! John kicked off the previous season inside the top-25 but could not follow his usual pace and stay inside the top-30.
He lacked notable results and struggled with injuries, embracing a 23-17 score and playing only one tournament after the US Open. Isner has won four matches in 2023, reaching the Dallas Open final and embracing a memorable battle with Yibing Wu.
The Chinese fended off four match points in a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 victory, preventing Isner’s first ATP title since Atlanta 2021. John has lost five straight matches to end his top-50 run after almost 700 weeks, failing in the first match in Houston and skipping the European clay swing.
Isner competed at Foro Italico nine times, scoring nine victories and reaching the semi-final in 2017 following wins over Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic. The American faced Rafael Nadal in the second round a year ago and experienced a 6-3, 6-1 loss in an hour and 17 minutes.
